competition success magazine This article was published in September NAVIC (NAVIGATION WITH INDIAN CONSTELLATION)The Centre is pushing smartphone makers to enable support for its NavIC navigation system in new devices from next year. o Aim of this move is to remove dependence on foreign satellite systems for navigation service requirements particularly for "strategic sectors." o This will remove the risk of the service being withdrawn or denied in a given situation.About NavIC o It is an independent stand-alone navigation satellite system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). o It consists of 7 satellites and covers the whole of Indias landmass and up to 1500 km from its boundaries. o This system was earlier known as IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System).Application: o Presently it is being used in public vehicle tracking in India for providing emergency warning alerts to fishermen venturing into the deep sea and for tracking and providing information related to natural disasters.Presently there are 4 navigation satellite systems operational in the world viz. GPS from the U.S. GLONASS from Russia Galileo from European Union and BeiDou from China. o In addition there are 2 regional systems viz.
